The Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka (GASL) is the premier professional body representing gemmologists in the source country. With the objective of providing a well-recognized and professionally accredited qualification, GASL has been conducting the Diploma in Gemmology [DGem(SL)] courses and examinations annually since 2009, producing competent professionals who serve both local and international gem and jewellery industries.

Objectives of the Diploma Programme
- To produce well-qualified professional gemmologists with modern knowledge and advanced techniques relevant to the gem and jewellery industry
- To enhance and upgrade the professional skills within the gem and jewellery sector
Programme Details
This course is open to both Sri Lankans and resident / non-resident foreign candidates. The medium of the course is English. Candidates will be interviewed, and only the successful candidates will be enrolled on the programme.

Sri Lankan Candidates

Diploma in Gemmology Examination Details
The examination consists of theory and practical components and is open to both Sri Lankan and foreign candidates.
Examination Structure
Theory Examination
- Theory Part I and Part II
Practical Examination
- Practical Part I and Part II
Theory Part I
- Ten (10) compulsory questions
- Duration: 2½ hours
- All questions carry equal marks
Theory Part II
- Fifteen (15) questions from Modules A, B, C, and D
- Candidates must answer six (6) questions:
- Three (3) from Module A
- One (1) from each of Modules B, C, and D
- Duration: 3 hours
- All questions carry equal marks
Practical Part I
- Identification of fifteen (15) specimens
- Duration: 1½ hours
Practical Part II
- Identification of fifteen (15) specimens
- Duration: 2½ hours
*Additional marks will be awarded for a duly completed Practical Workbook
*All four papers are compulsory for DGem(SL) candidates
Module B, C & D Certificate Candidates
- In Theory Part II, all three (3) questions in the relevant module are compulsory
- Do not need to answer questions from other modules
- Not required to sit Theory Part I
- Separate practical examinations will be conducted for relevant Modules
Awards and Certification
- Diploma in Gemmology [DGem(SL)] – awarded to candidates;
- passing all four papers, obtaining a minimum of 55% in each paper OR
- passing Modules B, C, and D separately (with their relevant practical exams), and later passing:
- Theory Part I
- Module A of Theory Part II
- Practical Part I
- Practical Part II
- Certificate in Gemmology – awarded to candidates passing Theory Part I and Practical Part I
- Module A – Certificate in Introduction to Gemmology
- Module B – Certificate in Diamond Grading and Trading
- Module C – Certificate in Fashioning of Gemstones, Jewellery Designing & Manufacturing
- Module D – Certificate in Pearls and Other Organic Gem Materials
Special Awards

Examinations will be held in December each year, and the medium of the examination is English.
Upon successfully receiving the Diploma, candidates are entitled to use the professional qualification DGem(SL) after their names. They are also eligible to apply for membership of the Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka and, upon acceptance, may use the designation MGA(SL). Many diploma holders produced by the Association are currently well employed in both Sri Lankan and international institutions.

- Sri Lankans : LKR 40,000 (LKR 10,000 per paper)
- Foreigners : LKR 120,000 (LKR 30,000 per paper)
Module Examination
- Sri Lankans : LKR 25,000
- Foreigners : LKR 75,000
The Executive Committee of GASL reserves the sole right to determine examination dates, venues, and the release of results.
